2018-03 Djibouti Doha Ray Multifunctional Port Opened by China

The opening ceremony of the Djibouti Multipurpose Port (Phase 1) in Djibouti, Africa was held on the 24th in Djibouti, the capital of Djibouti. Djibouti President Galilei and many other leaders, Guido, Chinese Ambassador to Djibouti Fu Huaqiang and representatives of Chinese, Somali, Ethiopian companies, etc. all attended.

The Doha Ray Multipurpose Port Project (Phase 1) is built by China Construction and is the largest port project by a Chinese-owned construction company to date in the Northeast African region. The project was officially launched in August 2014. The port has an annual designed cargo handling capacity of 7.08 million tons and a container capacity of 200,000 TEU.

Since the beginning of the project, Chinese builders have faced difficulties in terms of both human and land, harsh environment with high temperatures and severe shortages of living resources as well as production resources, all of which are dependent on imports. With China’s responsibility and Chinese standards, the contractors have carefully organized the construction. The main terminal and all the buildings and roads in the contract have been completed at an incredible speed, laying a solid foundation for the commissioning and official opening of the port area.

Djibouti is located in the Horn of Africa and is an important connection point of the Asia-Africa market and an important node of the “21st Century Maritime Silk Road”. The opening of Doha’s multi-purpose ports (phase 1) will provide Chinese companies with important transportation points to expand their African markets, and will also help develop Djibouti’s economy.
